The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is currently considering ATCO Electric's Facilties Applications for the contiguous portion of the Hanna Region Transmission Development project. Hearings on these applications were held in November 2011.


The ruling by the AUC, on this particular project, would cover where the line is to be located, whether ATCO Electric has fully conducted consultation with affected parties and other matters pertaining to the construction of the facilities.The Need for the HRTD was proposed by the Alberta Electric System Operator and approved by the AUC in April of 2010.

To date, feedback obtained during consultations has been used to draft Facilities Applications, submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), for the construction and operation of the following projects:


Following consultation with directly affected landowners, ATCO Electric has finalized the locations of access trails and temporary workspace for the above projects, with the exceptions of Nevis to Stettler, Rowley and the Oyen Area Interconnections. Overview

The proposed Hanna Region Transmission Development is within a large area that we have highlighted on the Overview Map. Within this area, a variety of system upgrades have been proposed. The upgrades include adding new transmission lines along corridors that have been cleared of brush and other obstacles, called a ‘right-of-way’; adding new substations; upgrading existing substations; and salvaging existing transmission lines and equipment.

Specific upgrades include:
  • Constructing approximately 242 kilometres km of new 240 kilovolt (kV) transmission line rightof-way
  • Constructing approximately 138 km of new 144 kV transmission line right-of-way
  • Salvaging approximately 193 km of existing 144 kV and 72 kV transmission line
  • Constructing nine new substations
  • Modifying 13 existing substations
