News and Announcements

When upgrades to Alberta’s electrical system are needed, they are identified by a not-for-profit organization with a public interest mandate called the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO).

The AESO has identified the need for new transmission facilities in the Hanna region to reinforce the current transmission system and to meet increased regional load demand. The new facilities will connect to wind generation, pipelines, and other industrial developments.

AESO has described the need for these facilities in a ‘Needs Identification Document (NID),’ that was filed withthe Alberta Utilities Commission on August 14,2009 and approved on April 29, 2010.

Overview

The proposed Hanna Region Transmission Development is within a large area that we have highlighted on the Overview Map. Within this area, a variety of system upgrades have been proposed. The upgrades include adding new transmission lines along corridors that have been cleared of brush and other obstacles, called a ‘right-of-way’; adding new substations; upgrading existing substations; and salvaging existing transmission lines and equipment.

Specific upgrades include:
  • Constructing approximately 300 kilometres km of new 240 kilovolt (kV) transmission line rightof-way
  • Constructing approximately 110 km of new 144 kV transmission line right-of-way
  • Salvaging existing 72 kV transmission line (approximately 170 km) and 144 kV
  • transmission line (approximately 110 km)
  • Constructing six new substations
  • Modifying 16 existing substations
